Brazilian free Internet access provider Gratis1 (www.gratis1.com) suspended definitely its service in Latin America on January 31, a consequence of its main technology provider 1stup Corp closing down operations.
According to a statement on the company's website, it is "exploring the possibility of an agreement with another ISP that could attend to the customer base." Gratis1 promised to notify its users if such an agreement should occur in the next few days.
Of several free ISPs that appeared in Brazil during 2000, only two now remain, IG and BR Free. Two major free ISPs closed down operations last year: Super11 and Netgratuita, while Tutopia (www.tutopia.com) will begin charging for access this month.
