2012 promises to be a bumper year for launches of satellites whose payloads will be directed fully or partially at Latin America. Although many are intended to replace units that are nearing the end of their useful life, the replacement vehicles are usually built with a greater number of transponders than the original unit, which promises to increase the amount of capacity available to the region. The expected increase in capacity comes on the back of record Latin American revenues for many in the satellite segment during 2011, helped along by the region's resistance to global financial turmoil and its inherent potential for growth.
